What is payment orchestration?

Payment orchestration is a software layer that sits between your checkout and your payment providers. Instead of connecting to one gateway, you integrate once with an orchestration platform, which connects you to many gateways, wallets, Buy Now Pay Later providers and local payment methods, and decides which provider handles each payment.

How it works

How does payment orchestration work?

Three things happen between your checkout and your providers.

01

Integrate once.

Your team integrates a single API. After that, you add or remove providers and payment methods in the dashboard, with no additional code.

Payment methods →
02

Route each payment.

The platform decides which provider handles each payment, by the rules you set. With payFURL, each payment goes to the cheapest eligible provider, based on the rates you enter.

Smart Routing →
03

Recover temporary declines.

If a decline is temporary, the payment can be retried once through a backup provider you nominate, in the same checkout session. Your customer doesn't enter their card again.

Multi-Provider Failover →
Why now

Why has payment orchestration become a necessity?

Five years ago, most online businesses ran one gateway and rarely thought about it. Three things changed.

Customers pay in more ways.

Cards, digital wallets, Buy Now Pay Later, PayTo and direct debit. One provider rarely covers every method in every market you sell to, and each new one used to mean a new integration.

Entering a new market →

One gateway is one point of failure.

When a single gateway goes down, your ability to take payments goes down with it. When its fees change, you have no alternative. When it doesn't support a payment method, you can't offer it.

Single-provider risk →

In Australia, card costs became yours to carry.

From 1 October 2026, Australian businesses can no longer add a surcharge to eftpos, Mastercard and Visa payments, and American Express is following. For businesses that surcharged, what each provider charges is now their own margin.

Where it sits

Where does payment orchestration sit?

payFURL is the checkout your customers pay through and the layer that decides which provider handles each payment. Your money never passes through it.

Step 1

Your customer pays

Through payFURL's checkout, embedded in your website or app. Card details never touch your servers.

Step 2

payFURL routes it

Each payment goes to the cheapest eligible provider, based on the rates you enter, and every provider's payments show up in one dashboard.

Step 3

The banks decide

Your provider passes it to the banks and card networks, which approve or decline in seconds. A temporary decline can be retried once through your nominated backup provider.

Step 4

The money goes to you

Funds settle from your provider into your bank account. payFURL never touches them.

Checklist

What to look for in a payment orchestration platform

Seven questions to ask any platform before you sign, and how payFURL answers each one.

1

Provider breadth that fits you

A wide spread of processors, wallets and Buy Now Pay Later options across the methods you actually need beats a large headline number.

payFURL: 70+ connections, with payments accepted in 195+ countries.
2

Routing you control

Can you decide which provider handles each payment, and see the cost of each one side by side?

payFURL: Smart Routing sends each payment to the cheapest eligible provider, based on the rates you enter.
3

Somewhere for a decline to go

Is there automated failover, or a single processing path?

payFURL: Temporary declines are retried once through your nominated backup provider.
4

Card storage that isn't tied to one provider

Are saved cards locked to one provider? Ask what you could export if you ever needed to leave.

payFURL: payFURL Vault: one token works across every provider connected to your account.
5

Reporting in one place

Can you see every provider's transactions and refunds without logging in to each one?

payFURL: Centralised Reporting brings transactions, refunds and disputes into one dashboard.
6

Who touches your funds

A pure orchestration layer that never touches your funds is a different risk profile to one inside the settlement chain.

payFURL: Pure SaaS. payFURL never touches funds and isn't an aggregator or an intermediary.
7

Security spelled out, not asserted

Ask for PCI compliance and card-data handling in writing.

payFURL: PCI DSS v4.0.1 certified. Businesses using the hosted checkout usually qualify for SAQ A, the lightest self-assessment.

More in the FAQ →

Does my business need payment orchestration?

Not every business does, yet. If you process a small volume of domestic payments through one channel, a gateway may be all you need. It's worth a serious look if you sell in more than one country, your transaction fees are a meaningful cost, a provider outage has cost you sales, or you want to add wallets, Buy Now Pay Later or local payment methods without new integrations.

What's the difference between a payment gateway and payment orchestration?

A payment gateway connects your business to one provider. A payment orchestration platform sits above multiple gateways, routing each transaction based on the rules and rates you set, giving you choice, control and resilience a single gateway can't provide.

Do I have to leave my current payment providers?

No. An orchestration platform like payFURL connects to your existing providers. You keep your commercial relationships and negotiated rates, and can add further providers at any time through the dashboard.

Does a payment orchestration platform hold my money?

It doesn't have to. payFURL is Pure SaaS: it never touches your funds and isn't an aggregator or an intermediary. You hold the account with each payment provider and control your own fees.

How long does payment orchestration take to set up?

With payFURL, most businesses are live within days, not months. Your team integrates one API, then adds providers and payment methods through the dashboard with no additional code.

Is payment orchestration secure?

It should be, and you should ask for proof. payFURL is PCI DSS v4.0.1 certified, independently audited and renewed every year. Card data never touches your servers, so businesses using the hosted checkout usually qualify for SAQ A.

Does payment orchestration work for in-store payments?

payFURL is purpose-built for online payments: your website, app and recurring billing. In-store payments aren't supported today.
