Why We Built payFURL: The Problem That Could Not Wait

Luke Littler on why depending on a single payment provider was a problem that could not wait, and why payFURL was built as the layer above the providers.

payFURL × FOUNDERS NOTE

I have spent most of my career watching the same problem play out in boardrooms and back offices across Australia and globally. A business finds a payment provider that works. They build on it, rely on it, and eventually become entirely dependent on it. And then one day their costs change, there's an outage at the worst possible moment, or the provider simply can't support what the business needs to do next.

The business has no leverage. No backup. No visibility into what it's actually paying, or why. It's dependent, not because of any contract, but because of the sheer cost and complexity of changing.

No company should lose a sale, overpay on a transaction, or fall victim to fraud because their payments infrastructure let them down. That's the problem payFURL exists to fix.

Too many businesses depend on a single payment relationship

When a business depends on a single payment relationship, it negotiates from weakness, not strength. And when something goes wrong, it has no choice but to wait.

We believed that was wrong. And we believed technology had reached the point where it was fixable. Not with another gateway, but with a layer above the gateways: a platform that gives businesses the choice, control and visibility they should have had from the start.

What we set out to build

payFURL was founded in February 2026 with one clear brief: build the protective layer between businesses and the complexity of payments. Pure SaaS, so we never touch funds. PCI DSS certified, so our customers can usually qualify for the lightest self-assessment (SAQ A). Connected to enough providers that no business ever has to depend on just one.

Today, we have 70+ connections across 195+ countries. 3D Secure authentication is available with optional fraud screening through our partner, Forter. We're PCI DSS v4.0.1 certified, the current global standard. And the brief hasn't changed.

The Why has not changed

Every decision we make at payFURL (every provider connection we build, every feature we ship, every customer we onboard) comes back to the same question. Does this give businesses more choice, more control and more visibility over their payments?

If the answer is yes, we build it. If it's not, we don't.

We built payFURL because the problem was real, it was significant, and no one was solving it for the businesses that needed it most. That's still why we show up every day.
